Presentation of the Mother Tongue Books project

The Mother Tongue Book project is a way to put books in the hands of children written in their native tongue. It originated in Haiti, where the formal language of school has been French, differing from the mother tongue language of the children, being Haitian Kreyòl, this practice is not exclusive to Haiti. Many children around the world are expected to learn to read and write in a language foreign from their own. This has made developing a functional literacy skill difficult and challenging for these children. The Mother Tongue Book project is a way to put books in their hands written in their native tongue.

Harvard Medical School’s Basic Science partnership, has recently been sponsoring and developing a series of science-based books, written by children and translated into Haitian Kreyòl. This has been an exciting project because it is built and based upon children’s natural interest and curiosity in life sciences. The illustrations for the books are equally important as these too build upon most children’s innate love of drawing.
